THE BOYFRIEND
An exclusive 'finishing school' in Nice was the setting for
this year's musical, 'The Boyfriend'. The set, costumes and make-up created
just the right sense of privilege and self-indulgence that runs through the
show. The orchestra, led by Greg Easter and Aaron Khan, looked and sounded
splendid. 'Kiki' Dubonnet (Nicola Pearce) and her girls maintained the fun and
froth and this was amplified by a large and enthusiastic chorus. Some of the
big numbers - 'So Much Nicer in Nice', 'Doing the Riviera', 'The Boyfriend' -
had the audience entranced; waltzing and an individualistic tango made for a
great spectacle. There were strong performances from the principals, Sarah
Fitzgerald's Maisie, Amy Hill's Polly and Perry Hamilton-Duirs' Bobby were
notable. A fine performance by Kate Claxton as Hortense and Alistair
Laurence-Douglas as Sir Percival and the multi-talented Luke Jules and the
cameo appearance of the Brockhursts (Tony Benterman and Lottie Fletcher) added
to the entertainment. Thank you to the whole company - and especially to Mrs
Baylay and Mr Dickson - for a wonderful show. In the immortal words of Mme
Dubonnet : 'Au revoir mes petits poissons.'
APOLOGIES
Mrs Baylay would like to apologise for the fact that she
omitted to publicly acknowledge the invaluable contribution of Mr Skipsey aka
Trevor Nunn, in bringing 'The Boyfriend' to CNS. Tony Benterman in particular
would like to thank him for the development of the character of Lord Brockurst.
ACADEMIC REVIEW DAY On Friday, all students - with parents,
where possible - discussed current progress and targets for the future with
their Tutor. Many issues were resolved during the day and follow-up discussions
are taking place this week. The evaluation of the day has been overwhelmingly
positive and this will help us to plan ahead for next year. |
UEA RESEARCH
PROGRAMME
A researcher from UEA, Anna Sallnow, will shortly be
exploring ethnic minority young people's experiences of schooling in Norfolk.
Students from the school are involved as co-researchers. Her interest was fired
by a comment of a young person on radio speaking of his own experience.
COUNTY MUSIC FESTIVAL SUCCESS The school orchestra gained a
"Highly Commended Performance Plus" award for their rendition of Walton's Crown
Imperial in St. Andrew's Hall on Tuesday 5 March. The adjudicator commented:
"All departments of the orchestra deserve mention for a well-balanced
performance, full of spirit, well prepared and presented." Congratulations to
all concerned.
EXTRA CURRICULAR MUSIC
Both orchestras, wind and jazz ensembles, choir and jazz
band recommence practices at the normal times this week (beginning 11 March).
Any problems, see Mr Dickson or Dr Ranyard.
WORLDWISE QUIZ
Last Thursday, the CNS Worldwise Quiz team competed in the
East Anglia regional final in Cambridge. After an early lead the CNS team (Owen
Reading, Barry Grimes, Steve Kuo) came a close second (out of 4) to Perse
School. Congratulations to the team and thanks to Mr Stannard, whose
enthusiastic organisation has led to many previous successes in the quiz, and
to Mr Baker, the team's transport manager.
SAFER ROUTES : PARENTS'
