OPEN EVENINGS
The last of our four Open Evenings - to welcome prospective Year 12 and Year 8 students and their parents to CNS took place on Tuesday this week. We presented our school at its best - colourful, imaginative, enthusiastic and pleased to welcome newcomers. So many positive comments have been received from our visitors about both the style and content of the evenings. Thank you to the speakers and musicians who contributed to the presentations in the Hall, thank you to all students who helped to bring to life the work in Curriculum Areas, thank you to the team of guides and thank you to all of our staff who so carefully prepared for the evenings. The evenings gave us a chance to show the whole CNS team at our best!

MATHS AND CHAOS !
Year 12 mathematicians were treated to a taste of university mathematics at the Maths Association Annual Lecture at UEA last week. Professor Chris Budd from Bath University offered some fascinating insights on the subject 'What's the Use of Chaos?' - illustrated by a mesmerising double pendulum whose antics had us all guessing as well as some impressive equations to admire. It was good to see our cohort of some 80 AS level students all together twice in one week - they certainly seemed to enjoy the Lecture more than the Senior Maths Challenge which they had tackled earlier in the week. Results of the Challenge are still awaited, but early indications are that the bright sparks from Year 11 have offered some fierce competition to their elders for top places.

YEAR 10 PARENTS' EVENING
This takes place next Thursday evening in the School Hall from 5.30pm to 7.30pm. Letters regarding the evening have already been issued by Mr Sofroniou.

ANNUAL PARENTS' MEETING
Wednesday 27 November at 7.30pm in the Sixth Form Common Room.
SAD NEWS
Students and parents - especially those who have been involved with the German Exchange - will be very sad to hear that Kathrin Hoffer, a student of Year 12 age at Gymnasium auf dem Asterstein, died in a car accident on Sunday. This is an extract from a letter written to Kathrin's friends in Koblenz by CNS students who knew her. 'Sie hat einen grossen Eindruck auf uns allen gemacht, besonders Ihre Freundlichkeit, Ihre Warme, Ihren Humor und Ihre Lebhaftigkeit sind Eigenschaften; die wir spontan mit Kathrin assoziieren.'

CHARITIES WEEK
Following the vote by students, we will be supporting the Cystic Fibrosis Research Trust as this year's good cause.

SPONSORSHIP APPEAL
Alice Everett, a former student at CNS, is making a sponsored trek to Peru for MIND, the mental health charity. It is an organised five day trek through the Peruvian High Andes and Alice will be trekking with a party of over 50 people. This will be a huge personal challenge for her as she has never attempted anything like this before. Alice is committed to raising £2500 in sponsorship for the charity having so far raised £843. If you would like to help Alice, please get in touch with the School Office.

MATHS CLUB
The answer to previous puzzle: he started at the North pole. Now cover up the bottom of this advert! Add up these numbers 1+2+3+......all the way to 20. Answer is ***. If you got it right, how long did you take? It's possible to do it in about 10 seconds. If you know how, you can do longer questions in the same amount of time. For other curiosities, come to Maths Club - Wednesdays 3pm, Room 18. (*** = 210)

AIDS AWARENESS DAY
The national AIDS Awareness Day is on 1 December. Information will be available in school next week.
