EATON ECHO

summer 98

Friday 25th September 1998 - No. 14.04

ASSESSMENTS
This week students in Years 8, 9 and 10 have been undertaking 'benchmark' assessments to establish the minimum target grades they should achieve in each of the subjects they take during the year. The assessments will be referred to by teachers and Academic Tutors when they are measuring students' progress. Students should aim to exceed their minimum target grade and to add value to their performance. Following consultation with teachers and parents, there will be some modifications to the sequence and manner of reporting to parents. A letter announcing these changes will be issued in the near future.

COMPUTER COURSES
Computer courses begin for parents next Wednesday, 30th September, at 7.00 pm, with an introduction to computers. Parents should meet first in the Hall and then will have the use of one of the 100+ PCs in the school. Expert instruction and advice will be available throughout the evening. The session on Wednesday 7th October will deal with word processing and that on Wednesday 14th October with spreadsheets. After half term the course moves on to multimedia, CD-ROMs and the Internet. Many parents have signed up for the course and we hope they will find it enjoyable and worthwhile.

LUNCHES
Next week students from Years 8 and 9 have priority in the lunch queue at 12. 45 pm. Students from Years 10 and 11 should queue from 1.00 pm. Sorry about the confusing notice in last week's Echo! There is no priority queuing for the sandwich trolley.
ASSOCIATION AGM
The Annual General Meeting of the School Association takes place next Tuesday, 29th September, at 7.30 pm. The agenda is printed overleaf. The Association is a vital link between staff, students and parents as well as raising considerable sums of money for the benefit of all students. Please come along: parents of students who are new to the school are especially welcome.

SPORTS HALL
At long last the Sports Hall has become available for use and the full programme of PE activities can take place. The fire which put the facility out of action occurred in January, so it has been a very long wait. Thanks to the PE staff who have coped so well with all the difficulties- and to the students who accepted the situation without complaint.

NEWSLETTERS
During Activities Week, a number of students expressed an interest in producing a newspaper for students by students- and there was even the suggestion that the good old Echo was due for a makeover! If you are interested in either venture, please meet Dr Elkins in the Hall next Monday, 28th September, at 1.25 pm.

CHRISTMAS SALE
We have been asked by Save the Children to publicise its Christmas Sale which will take place in the Event Room of the Beehive Public House, Leopold Road, from 10.00 am until 4.00 pm on Tuesday 6th October. Items for sale include Jabberwocky Children's Clothes, Jugs Plus, small pottery gifts and Danish Christmas decorations.
