summer 98

Friday 2nd October 1998 - No. 14.05

PRIZES
Prizes and commendations for students of last year's Year 11 will be awarded next Thursday, 8th October, at 7.30 pm. We look forward to a good turnout of students, many of whom are now in the Sixth Form at CNS, and hope that their parents will come to join in the celebration of achievement. The ceremony will be followed by light refreshments in the Dining Area.

COMPUTER COURSES
Computer courses began for parents on Wednesday of this week and will continue at the same time for the next two Wednesdays, 7th and 14th October. There will then be a fortnight's break for OFSTED week and half-term before the sessions continue in November. Some 40 parents came to the first session- and looked as nervous as Year 8 students on their first day at CNS! We hope they enjoyed the evening and gained in confidence during the evening.

SCHOOL FUND
Parents of students in Years 8 and 9 should have received a letter earlier this week outlining the arrangements for covenanting contributions to the School Fund. Parents of students in other year groups will receive a letter early next week inviting cash or cheque contributions. The School Fund gives CNS the opportunity to subsidise certain trips and events, to help students in particular need; it also supports the publication of the annual magazine which is issued free to all students. Countless students have benefited in small- and often unseen- ways from the availability of the fund and we hope parents will continue to support it with a small contribution.
ASSOCIATION AGM
The Annual General Meeting of the School Association took place on Tuesday of this week and officers and committee members were elected. Mrs Ann Salmon continues as Chairperson, with Mrs Madeleine Keep as Vice-Chair and Mr Paul Gaunt as Treasurer. Secretarial duties will be shared by Mrs Ann Smith and Mrs Ros Earl. Several parents of students who are new to the school joined the Committee. The Association looks forward to a full programme of fund-raising and educational activities and welcomes suggestions from anybody as to new ventures and events.

DRAMA
Casting for this year's junior production, 'The Phantom Tollbooth', has been completed and lists are on the Drama noticeboards. Over 60 students in Years 8 and 9 are taking part. And congratulations to Samantha Moore of 9Fh, who has been selected to take part in this year's pantomime 'Aladdin' at the Theatre Royal.

MUSIC
Next Wednesday, 7th October, members of the Jazz Octet will be working with the saxophonist and composer, Andy Sheppard, on pieces which he has written for the group to perform at the East Coast Jazz Festival next month.

PHOTOGRAPHS
All students should have collected their photo proofs to take home to parents. Orders must be placed in the box in the Hall before school or at morning break: next Wednesday, 7th October, is the deadline.
* NEXT WEEK IS WEEK 2 * EARLY LUNCH: Y9, Y10; LATE LUNCH: Y8, Y11
