Friday 20th November 1998 - No. 14.11

INTAKE MEETINGS
The first of the school's two meetings for students in Year 7 at middle school and their parents took place last night; the second meeting will be at 7.30 pm next Tuesday, 24th November. Thanks to the many CNS students who have volunteered to take part in the evenings: your enthusiasm for the school is much appreciated. take school's senior management team received a verbal debrief from the OFSTED team at the end of the inspection week before half term.

CALENDAR CHANGES
All students in Years 8-11 will be given letters today to take home to parents, announcing dates of parent-teacher consultation meetings and the issuing of reports. Please note that next Friday, 27th November, which was originally published as a staff training day is now a normal school day and the Academic Review Day proposed for Monday 30th November has now been cancelled: mock exams for Years 11 and 13 will now begin on that day. A full explanation of the changes is contained in the letter.

WORLDWISE QUIZ
Last week eight schools competed in the Norfolk round of the Geographical Association's Worldwise Quiz. The CNS team of Peter McKeown, Simon Bradshaw and Lukman Hussin finished a close second to the team from KES, Kings Lynn. CNS has an excellent track record in this competition, reaching the national finals in London last year. Thanks to Mr Stannard for preparing the team and to all staff at CNS who helped to host the event which was held at this school.
SCHOOL ASSOCIATION
The Association is appealing for donations of prizes for raffles which will take place at the Quiz Night on 5th December and on the evenings of the lower school production of 'The Phantom Tollbooth' on 10th and 11th December. Please hand in anything at the office: all gifts will be very gratefully received.

DEMOCRACY
Last week a number of CNS students spent the day at City Hall, Norwich, as part of the Council's plans to involve young people in its decision-making process. And this afternoon, Charles Clarke, MP for Norwich South and School Standards Minister, will be holding a 'surgery' here to allow individual CNS students to raise matters of concern. Today is UNICEF Day, when there is a focus world-wide on the needs of children.

MUSIC
Tomorrow night, Saturday 21st November, the CNS Jazz Octet will be performing with saxophonist Andy Sheppard at a sell-out concert at the Norwich Playhouse. Andy Sheppard's CD, 'Learning to Wave', has just been released to great acclaim. And thanks to all-girl group, 'Fierce', who performed at CNS on Tuesday. Over £200 was raised from the admission fee of 50p and this will go to next term's Charities Week fund.

SPORT
Congratulations to Charity Barnes of Year 8 who has been selected to represent the English Schools' U13 Badminton Team at an event in the Netherlands just after Christmas. And thanks to the RFU team who provided rugby coaching for a large number of Year 8 students this week.
