EATON ECHO

summer 98

Friday 15th January 1999 - No. 14.17

YEAR 11
The parent-teacher consultation meeting for Year 11 takes place next Thursday, 21st January, from 5.30 pm onwards. At the meeting teachers will make use of the evidence of student performance from the mock exams and will concentrate on what needs to be done over the next four months to ensure good results in the summer.

EXAMINATIONS
Next week there are modular exams for Year 13 students taking A level Mathematics, Year 12 students taking A level Further Mathematics, and for all students taking GNVQ courses. The morning exams begin at 9.00 am; it is important that students know their timetables and arrive at school in good time for the start of the exams.

The Barn will be used next week for the examinations and there will be occasions when the only entrance and exit to Rooms 80-90 will be the door by room 90: there will be a barrier under the covered way to let students know when this restriction applies.

JEWELLERY IN PE
For safety reasons, jewellery should not be worn in PE lessons or in any contact sport.

The Local Education Authority has recently issued advice to all Norfolk schools emphasising this point. There have been cases of serious injury to both wearers and other people in other parts of the country and there are very strict regulations which apply to most competitive sports. There may be exceptional cases when, for instance, ear studs may be taped, rather than removed.: the PE teacher will advise on this and his or her view must be accepted.
CHARITIES WEEK
Proposal forms for fund-raising activities in Charities Week were notified to students via Form Tutors on Tuesday. Students should return their proposals either to their form tutors or directly to the office by the end of school on Friday of next week, 22nd January. Proposals will then be vetted and a timetable of events and a list of sponsored activities will be published. We are keen to receive suggestions for activities we have not tried before, even if students are not prepared to commit themselves personally to such an activity. We are still in the process of finalising the project we intend to support. The PEP lesson on 28th January will provide information on the project and the conditions and circumstances of the area in which it is located.

COMPUTING FOR PARENTS
The first of six sessions this term began last Wednesday: the remaining five sessions begin at 7.00 pm each Wednesday, with the exception of Wednesday 17th February, which is during the week of the half-term break. We are glad that many parents are taking advantage of this opportunity: information technology will play a significant part in the working lives of all the students who are at the school.

BAD WEATHER
Parents are reminded that if there is a need to keep the school closed at the start of the school day as a result of bad weather, that information will be broadcast on Radio Norfolk and Radio Broadland from 6.30 am onwards. It is some years now since we last had to close and we hope that there will be no reason to do so this year.
