EATON ECHO

summer 98

Friday 26th March 1999 - No. 14.26

END OF TERM
Term ends at 2.20 pm today, Friday 26th March. Morning lessons will be as normal, there will be a shortened period 5 and period 6 will be cancelled. The Summer term begins at 8.45 am on Monday 12th April.

CITY OF NORWICH SCHOOL
As from September 1999, the school's name will revert to 'City of Norwich School', its name from the time of its foundation in 1910 until 1970.

New articles of government, which apply to all state schools from September, give governors the opportunity to re-name their schools, which is why the decision has been made at this time.

When the school became comprehensive in 1970, it was felt that retaining the name of the grammar school would give CNS an unfair advantage over other city schools, hence the inclusion of Eaton in its title. After 30 years of comprehensive education, that argument no longer applies and the school's present reputation is based on its success since 1970. CNS has always served the whole community of Norwich and has never been a neighbourhood school, so the governors believe that re-instating 'City of Norwich School' is entirely proper and appropriate.

CONCERT
Last Saturday, 20th March, three bands, 'Monkey Monkey', 'Utopia' and 'Pulse', all of which involved CNS students, put on a great show in front of a packed audience. Thanks to the staff who supported the gig, but special thanks to Andrew Fitzgerald of Year 11, who organised the show, the proceeds of which will go entirely to the Charities Week fund, which is now well over £4,000.
SCHOOL ASSOCIATION
Earlier in March, the School Association announced a 50:50 Auction in the School Hall on Saturday 24th April. The success of the auction will depend on the number of items available and we are asking parents and students to take advantage of the Easter holiday to find anything which they no longer want or use, but which others might want to buy. Half of the price of any sale will go to the person who put the item up for auction and half will go to the school, so everybody gains. Please let the school office know if you intend to bring something in, or telephone Anne on 505636: she will be pleased to advise you if you have any queries. The Quiz Evening on 13th March made a profit of £437: thanks to Brenda Clarke for again presenting the Quiz on the basis of no charge to the school.

YEAR 9
The presentation of next year's courses to Year 9 students and their parents takes place in the first week back after the holiday on Thursday 22nd April. Parents will have received a letter about the arrangements, which this year involve two identical presentations at different times.

AWARD ASSEMBLIES
Award assemblies have taken place for all main year groups this week: congratulations to all those students who gained bronze, silver and gold certificates. The certificates are awarded on the number of credits gained throughout the term.

SCHOOL MEALS
From the beginning of next term, there will be a small increase in the cost of school meals. The value of a free meal entitlement will increase from £1.35 to £1.40.
