summer 98

Friday 11th June 1999 - No. 14.34

SUMMER UNIFORM
Summer uniform concessions will come into place as from next Monday, 14th June. Ties and blazers will not have to be worn for the remainder of term, but, in all other respects, uniform requirements are unaltered.

SCHOOL EXAMINATIONS
School examinations for Years 8, 9, 10 and 12 begin next Monday, 14th June. Timetables have been published and students must take into account the room changes which are involved. Year 12 students have study leave for the duration of their exams. School exams have two purposes: to allow students to experience the conditions they will meet in Key Stage 3 tests, GCSE and A level examinations and to allow them, their parents and teachers to gain additional evidence on what skills and knowledge have been attained over the school year.

HAGUE VISIT
Last Monday, 7th June, CNS was visited by the Rt. Hon. William Hague, MP, leader of the Conservative Party and a former government minister. Fifteen Year 12 students had the opportunity of asking Mr Hague questions and of representing their views on a number of issues. While Mr Hague's visit was connected with yesterday's European election, he did not use the visit to present his party's agenda to the students, but to listen to their concerns. We agreed to the visit on the basis that it gave our students the chance to meet a major political figure- and we approve of any politician wanting to find out young people's views.
SUMMER FETE
The Fete is just a fortnight away on Saturday 26th June, so please make sure that this date is firmly in your diary. Raffle tickets have been issued and we would ask parents to do their best to sell as many as they possibly can. There are extra books of raffle tickets in the school office for anybody who wants them.

HOME SCHOOL AGREEMENT
Parents who attended the annual meeting with Governors on 27th May received a copy of the draft school agreement which needs to be in place by September. There was some discussion at the meeting, but those who were present were asked to send any comments through to the school. Some have been received and have been very helpful. The revised draft will be distributed to all students to take home to parents next Friday, 18th June, together with a questionnaire on uniform. Returns will need to be back to the school by Friday 25th June.

FARM VISITS
All Year 8 form groups have visited a local farm this week as part of their Geography course. We are grateful to the farmer for his willingness to allow our students to get a first-hand sense of an important industry.

CHARITIES WEEK PRESENTATION
We shall be presenting the Charities Week cheque to Global Care at a special assembly on Friday 2nd July. Those at Global Care are astounded at the amount (over £4,700) which has been raised to support the Literacy Project in the Democratic Republic of Congo and will talk about the uses which will be made of the money at the assembly and also in some morning lessons.
